In fashion, accessories are essential in shaping an individual’s style. Sunglasses (also referred to as shades or sunnies) stand out for their functional purpose as a form of protective eyewear – from the sun (harmful UV rays) and excessive bright visible light – and since the 1930’s (or so) have been a popular accessory worn mainly on the beach. BUT, it didn’t take long for fashionistas to quickly recognize the right pair of sunglasses can transform an outfit from basic to remarkable making them the ultimate tool for anyone looking to make a statement.
Don’t get me wrong, for I’m no expert – but we all know that as with everything else in fashion, there are elemental factors to consider when breaking out your next pair of sunnies. I am just going to review and leave some guidelines I personally follow here to ensure that your choices align with your style to enhance your look.
First, I am picky (and this is not breaking news) about the shape (shocker!). I always heard considering the shape of your face when choosing the right pair of sunglasses is the most important factor so make sure the frame compliments your face. Understanding the shape of your face is helpful in choosing shades that will flatter your features. I tend to have a more rounded shaped head and face so gravitate towards the ‘cat-eyed’ square frames – which is what I have on the related Instagram shopping carousel. I may or may not have picked a similar frame for Emma’s shades (LOL, I’m dead!). Since I brought this up, let me clarify that while Emma likes CHIC PAWS, her ‘doggles’ do serve a similar purpose. Yeah, she’s cute with them on – especially, since a Pure Barre Wilmington friend bedazzled them – but also know we use them to protect her eyes from debris kicking back into her carriage while getting trailered on my bike (in case you missed it). We opted to get Rex Specs because they come with interchangeable lenses so we can adjust her look depending on our adventure.
Next, fully aware that I started to collect sunglasses as part of my closet staple when dressing, I very much consider quality now. Investing in higher quality pairs that not only affect the overall look but also matter when it comes to the protection your eyes receive from UV rays are equally inherent. So, I go after reputable brands that offer both style and purpose.
Again, and this one is key, your sunglasses should match your style! Speaking from example here, I have more of a classic style and chase after timeless looking frames – again, because I seem to be collecting them – which is why I gravitate towards the ‘cat-eye’ square look. Only you know your vibe so I urge you to experiment with colors (from versatile neutrals that match every outfit to bold hues that add a pop of personality), different sizes, and looks outside your box. I recently added an ‘edgy’ pair to my collection – a colorful version of my classic ‘cat-eye’ look – NO REGRETS!
Also, consider the occasion as well as the season. I hope this one is obvious because all I really have to say about this is that I usually adapt my choice of sunglasses to enhance my overall look while reflecting in the seasonal spirit – a sleek and sophisticated pair serves a formal event best and larger frames provide more coverage in the summer – you get my drift?!
Now, I may be oversharing, but I also want to tell you about the elements I stay away from when buying sunglasses. Pieces that are overly trendy or age inappropriate are a definite NO in my decision making process as well as ill-fitting frames, overdoing logos, and ignoring functionality. “One size DOES NOT fit all”!
Keeping in mind that sunglasses are a powerful accessory, style is a form of self expression and regardless your choice should reflect your unique personality while elevating your game. Whether out on the boat or attending a formal wedding, I always make sure I pick the right pair. I urge you to do the same to make a lasting impression and leave your mark as a fashionista!
